Brand Architecture

Brand architecture (or brand structure) is the way a company organizes its brands (i.e., brand names/brand marks). It provides a comprehensive inventory and mapping of a marketer’s brands and the products to which they apply. This strategic framework defines how a marketer organizes, names, and relates its various brands and sub-brands.

Three common brand architectures are:

Blanket family (also called umbrella or master brand): Only one uniform and universal brand, often the corporate name/mark, is used for every item in the product assortment.

Individual: A different and unique brand is used for each item in the assortment.

Combination blanket family + individual: A combination of the first two branding structures is used. A blanket family brand is used for all assortment items, along with a unique brand for each (i.e., sub-brands).

A good brand architecture enables customers to navigate through the company’s offers, understand the relationships of products to each other, and to the corporate brand. [1]
